Covenant Funded Projects

There are approximately 77 projects that have been funded under the Covenant. Some of these are complete and some are still underway. Funded projects aim to improve education, awareness and knowledge, divert additional tonnes of packaging from landfill and/or improve infrastructure.

They range from a national strategy to recycle post-consumer rigid plastics (a world first) to processing of MRF residual waste glass fines, to developing recycling systems for Commercial and Industrial premises. Some of these projects investigate the use of new technology and developing new markets for materials as well as data collection.

Projects are grouped into state, and fall under various categories including:

  • New systems and markets - focussing on the trials, or expansion, of new systems that seek to increase the amount of recyclable material that is collected or to identify new uses for previously unrecoverable material.

  • Education/awareness - increasing public awareness of recycling and material recovery. Education campaigns can inform people about the wider environmental and social benefits of recycling and can help change attitudes towards undertaking recycling. Awareness campaigns may also provide people with useful practical information about how and where they can engage in recycling activity.

  • Data collection - reporting against Covenant KPIs and targets.

  • Research - identifying or better informing where improvements may be required and the best way to go about making them.
  • Infrastructure -  focussing on improving or expanding recycling infrastructure, typically by the investment in new plant and machinery.

In order to obtain funding, projects must first pass through the funding approvals process and to do so must contribute to achieving the Covenant’s goals and targets and coincide with the project priorities developed by the National Projects Group.
Please note: applications for Round 1 2010 are in progress.
