Minister Garrett launches Westfield project
Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, the Honourable Peter Garrett helped launched a new recycling initiative on November 13. Westfield Shopping Centres plan to install recycling bins at 35 centres and by doing so divert more than 600 tonnes of cans and bottles from landfill each year, that's 150,000 shopping trolleys! This project is thanks to a partnership between industry and government under the National Packaging Covenant. Read more here

New $5.4 million WA glass recycling plant
Although WA residents conscientiously recycle their glass, because there were no glass reprocessing facilities in Perth, used glass was either sent to landfill or trucked to Adelaide, both costly and environmentally unsustainable. The National Packaging Covenant and Colmax Glass are proud to be major partners in a new $5.4 million glass reprocessing plant soon to be built in Perth. Read more here.
Minister Jennings finds afterlife for polystyrene
Have you ever bought a plasma screen or fridge and asked: “What do I do with the white polystyrene foam it came packed in?” You put it in the general waste bin and typically it is sent to landfill. Known as Expanded Polysytrene it needs special machines to reprocess. Barwon Regional Waste Management Group teamed up with GDP industries in Geelong for Covenant funding to buy a machine to reprocess EPS in the local region. The highly successful project has diverted about four Olympic sized swimming pools of EPS from landfill.Read more here.
