White papers from APC think tank released
Fri 31 March 2017
Helen Lewis (Helen Lewis Research), Jason Goode (Simplot), APC CEO Trish Hyde, Edward Kosior (NEXTEK) and Nina Cleeve-Edwards (Nestlé) were presenters in the Sustainable Design stream of the APC think tank.
Following the Australian Packaging Covenant’s (APC) successful think tank event in Sydney, we have produced two white papers, one regarding sustainable design, the other about a circular economy for soft plastics. These papers explore the barriers to packaging sustainability and opportunities to innovate and influence. They include challenges identified by participants, as well as recommendations and action items from the APC.
Participants were inspired in the morning session of our think tank by our international keynote speaker Dr Leyla Acaroglu. This inspiration continued in the afternoon sessions where participants were split into two streams examining sustainable design and soft plastics, where they heard from respected speakers from industry and academia and then participated in an intensive brainstorming and discussion session.
Our sustainable design white paper includes recommendations to implement common metrics for the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs), evidence-based disposal labelling, encouraged recycled content use, and a facilitation of cross-sectorial collaboration.
Our soft plastics white paper includes recommendations to foster and develop end-markets of recovered soft plastics to increase the value of recovered soft plastics, develop an industry-agreed definition of soft plastics, and the standardisation of recovery options across material recovery facilities to enable kerbside disposal of soft plastics.
From these recommendations, the APC has listed action items it has committed to in order to achieve these goals.
A common piece of feedback was the appetite for collaboration and the think tank event itself received positive feedback for providing this forum. The APC has committed to a long-term dialogue and knowledge exchange through a series of events and activities that address packaging sustainability.
